Con il suo quinto album, Elin Furubotn esce per la prima volta dai confini discografici norvegesi. Come suona chiaro sin dai titoli, non si tratta delle solite jazz songs anglosassoni. Oltre alla lingua, anche le
melodie portano l’impronta della loro terra d’origine, per quanto proiettate entro strutture e strumentazioni internazionali:
virtù della globalizzazione della canzone d’autore. Anche se gli assoli di sax cercano di dare una parvenza di jazz (che suona demodé sopra queste linee ritmiche), siamo in ogni caso davanti a un prodotto cantautoriale che della tradizione afroamericana non sa che farsene. Alcuni brani profumano di fiordo; altri sono electropop con un occhio alle playlists radiofoniche; altrove spunta mood music esistenzialista. Il finale dimostra senza dubbi che l’inglese si distende sulla musica assai più agevolmente del norvegese.

Elin Furubotn singt ihre Lieder auf Norwegisch: dabei widmet sie sich in einer ausdrucksvollen, klaren Sprache den verschiedensten dramatischen und weniger dramatischen Unwägbarkeiten des Lebens. Sie tut dies meist unprätentiös, auch in der Instrumentierung des Albums eher unaufällig.
Und gerade dieses Fehlen von Glamour und Pomp lässt jedes Lied zu einem Kleinod werden, in der Tiefe jedes Songs findet sich ein schillernder Kern: es sind die wenigen Muscheln auf dem Meeresgrund, die eine Perle bergen, die Furubotn für ihr Album ausgewählt hat – im Vergleich zur Masse derjenigen, die beim genauen Betrachten leer und inhaltslos sind.
Dass Furubotn in ihrer Heimatsprache singt, macht diese Musik doppelt reizvoll – die Übersetzung ins Englische ist im Booklet vorhanden, so dass nachgelesen werden kann, was sie uns ins Ohr singt. Dem Hörer bietet sich aber auch die Möglichkeit, dem Norwegischen wie einer Traumsprache zu lauschen und zu erraten oder zu erahnen, was vielleicht das Thema eines Liedes sein könnte. So kann “Heilt Nye Vei” zum mehrgleisigen Sinneserlebnis werden.
Sehr überzeugend und angenehm bei all den überproduzierten Alben, die auch in Umlauf sind – hier gibt es noch Ecken und Kanten bei den Songs, hier wird mit einem hohen Maß an Authentizität zu Werke gegangen. Ein Geheimtipp, der trotzdem hoffentlich mehr und mehr Hörer findet.

Norway’s talented singer/songwriter, Elin Furubotn, is joined with an excellent repertoire of musicians and jazzy instrumentation. Elin incorporates a folk and pop vein into the mix. The thirteen songs represent a plethora of ear-friendly material with “Heilt Nye Vei,” “Slepp Tvilen Fri,” “Ei Stille Na,” and “Treet” rounding out the top tracks on the album. Heilt Nye Vei, which means “completely new way” is a perfect way to describe the music, as it is cutting-edge and inventive. Elin’s Norwegian vocals soar into outer echelons of musical creativity with some of the vocals possessing a Cranberries tone. At any rate, Elin is the most innovative artist to come out of Norway in recent memory. Karl Seglem appears on sax. Anyone with an interest in avant-garde pop and easy-listening with a jazzy element from the Scandinavian nation will be very pleased with Elin’s latest achievement from Ozella Music. ~ Matthew Forss

Norwegian Elin Furubotn’s International Debut Album, Heilt Nye Vei (New Path), just came out yesterday (April 10th) via Ozella Music.
The singer-songwriter describe her music on the album as: “crosses lines between jazz and singer-songwriter stuff, between rock and folk, but I don’t like to split my interests and passions up. And in scenes like in [sax player Karl] Stavanger, you get to know everyone very well. It’s a more intimate scene, and it’s easy for musicians from different backgrounds to work together.”
